Who we are and what we do

Jagdgebrauchshund Verein = "Hunting Dog Club" in German.

The JGHV (Jagdgebrauchshund Verband) is the umbrella organization of hunting-dog clubs in Germany including breed clubs, e.g. Verein Deutsch Drahthaar and Weimaraner Klub, as well as independent training and testing clubs.

  • Remember: JGV is the U.S. club
    • JGHV is the German umbrella association

(Editor's Note: Germans have long words, but they find them as unwieldy as the non-German speakers do so the Germans usually shorten long expressions or reduce them to letters).

JGV-USA was conceived in1993 as a full member organization (No. 1103)  of the German JGHV. The JGHV is the umbrella association of hunting dog clubs in Germany and has been largely responsible for the immense success of the German performance-based breeding system by providing standardized tests for all versatile hunting dogs.

JGHV testing standards have bound breeding organizations for nearly 100 years, including those organizations represented in North America, i.e. VDD/GNA and NADKC. By evaluating the breeding quality of dogs through examination of their performance record and that of their offspring, German breeders consistently produce dogs most suitable for the modern foot hunter. These dogs exhibit a high degree of cooperation and trainability coupled with the ability to handle any game their master desires to hunt.

Wolf Schmid-Körby of the JGHV in Germany, and his wife, Uta Körby, gave seminars in Union, MO, and East Windsor, NJ as part of the program to standardize North American testing with that in Germany.

Similar to regional training and testing clubs in Germany, JGV-USA is organized to support all versatile hunting dogs bred under an FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) approved breeding program or registry. This includes most of Europe, including Germany and Austria. American Kennel Club and Canadian Kennel Club are not members of the FCI, AKC-registered dogs must also be registered with an FCI-approved breed registry.

Whereas tests organized by breed clubs may restrict entries of other breeds,  all versatile hunting dogs are equally welcome at JGV-USA tests.

JGV-USA is the representative of the JGHV in North America not concerned with a single breed and we administer all tests of the JGHV just as in Germany (VJP, HZP, VGP, BTR, VBR, and HN). Our test results are reported immediately to Germany for inclusion in the JGHV permanent database and they are published in the German national hunting dog magazine (Der Jagdgebrauchshund) and in the annual publication of the JGHV's central registry, the Stammbuch. We receive immediate notification and updates on test regulations from the JGHV and  JGV-USA is  entitled to (and does) send a representative to the annual JGHV convention.

In the US, JGV-USA sees its primary role in the promotion of versatile hunting dogs for ethical hunting in field and and over water. Our philosophy is grounded in the love and need for a reliable, versatile gun dog, and in the desire to improve our hunting dog's performance, regardless of breed, hunting style or kennel name. JGV-USA has no puppies to sell or ideologies to promote. Our only desire is to see reliable and versatile gun dogs in the hands of all dedicated sportsmen and sportswomen.
